Turkish Feast

Saturday night we invited some friends over for a Turkish feast.  It was a fabulous evening - great food, wonderful company, and a good excuse to ramble on & on about our favorite country.  We had brought a lot of foods back with us from our trip, but on Friday I discovered a fantastic little Turkish market in Bellevue, so I was able to pick up a few more things.  I will be frequenting that store often!!

We started with some fun Turkish snacks:  dried Turkish apricots, dried mullberries and apricot pits.

For dinner, we served:  chicken doner, spinach borek, grilled eggplant, shephard salad, eggplant salad, carrots in yogurt, lentil soup, ekmek (bread), Turkish peynir (white cheese) and lots of little meze (pickled figs, jellied eggplant, visne jelly, Turkish olives ...).  Of course we served ayran (our favorite yogurt drink), visne (the kids' favorite sour cherry drink) and salgam (a not-so-favorite pickled beet drink).

And for dessert:  a platter of Turkish delight & Turkish chocolates, and homemade kadayif (similar to baklava, but made with shredded phyllo dough).  YUM!!!

YuM!! Your spread is much more over the top than ours. This week it is just tava, borek, hummus, and sometimes I'll add lentil soup. You can buy Ayran at the grocery here, but I think it tastes like liquid cheese. ga. You guys have always thrown a great dinner party. Did he use the doner machine? I have a pintrest crock pot recipe that has pretty good flavors for a doner-ish sub.
