A few years ago, Nathan started playing a game with the kids that has annoyed the heck out of me ever since. They call it Monster Hide-and-Go Seek.
First, they turn off all the lights in the house. The kids count while Nathan hides somewhere in the house. Then they go look for him. In the dark. While they're searching, Nathan moves around from place to place, so they never know for sure where they will find him. And when they do . . . He ROARS and goes chasing them SCREAMING through the house and back to base. There they lay panting and laughing and begging him to go hide again.
I'm always sitting at the computer while this is going on, phone in hand so that I can call 911 as soon as someone tumbles down the stairs and breaks a leg. It is just too noisy and chaotic and dangerous for me, but the kids (and dad) absolutely love it. Seriously, despite all the fabulous gifts and vacations and special things we have done for our kids, I'm pretty sure that they will remember Monster Hide-and-Go Seek as some of their favorite childhood memories.
It reminds me of this great Mormon Ad:

How have I not seen this before??? I absolutely LOVED this video.
Although I'm with you on the whole, "Whose limb will be setting in plaster first?" thing, you're right: The kids remember those things for-EVER. (The reminiscences usually start with, "Remember how I got this scar...?")
I haven't seen the video either. It's great! One of my favorite things to do at the visitor's center in SLC is sit and watch all the Mormon commercials. They make me cry every time!
Nathan is such a great dad. The more of those kinds of memories your kids have, the better parents they'll be.
This is Jenny by the way. For some reason, Google isn't letting me sign in with my username.
Love that!
I've never seen that ad either. Must only be showing in your house. I hate games like that. Darin likes to "fly" the boys on his legs above his head (he's laying on his back). The boys go over and over. I just get crazier and crazier. Then I get to try and put them to bed. That is when all the crazy games happen, 2 minutes before bedtime.
Yeah, fun dad, rotten mom.
Okay, I LOVE that you guys (Nathan) play with the kiddos like this. We love to play hide and seek with the lights out, although since Mae has been born, it has been less and less. I think the moving around bit sounds like more fun. Thanks for the great idea!
Ps- Hows the limerick writing coming??
Ooo Brooke, you're giving me ideas...Blain's the careful one in our household; I'm usually the one riling up the kids (and then telling them to quiet down already!).
Hide and seek in the house would be a major treat for my kiddos...any reward I can come up that's non-candy goes in my arsenal!
I haven't seen that video before, it is awesome!! What great memories your kids will have. I am always happy to see a glimpse of my brother as a Dad, he is such a neat guy!
