Emma's Christmas Experience

Emma chose making gingerbread houses as her Christmas experience this year. This new tradition has already made a huge difference in our holiday enjoyment. We are spending more time together as a family and making some fun (albeit messy) memories.

Isn't this the face of pure Christmas happiness!? Even I had to overlook the coating of sticky, gooey icing covering our kitchen when I saw how much fun they were all having.

Even Torah had a few brief moments of silence in between her usual screaming. This was, after all, her Witching Hours.

And now, the finished products:
(Two kids had pre-made kits from Costco, and the other two made theirs out of graham crackers. Bet you can't guess which are which.) :-)

I don't know if you had time to read my November post, but we had reached a tipping point at our house. Ever since then, we have been very purposeful about "family activities". We've been playing new games, cooking more together and generally....liking each other!
This month, I made a calendar, and we are purposefully writing down one thing for which we are thankful OR one act of kindness OR something we do as a family. Even daddy and I have our own calendar. Yes, I've given in on the electronics...come on, it's icy, snowy, soggy and gross out! But, we are limited to 30 minutes per day...all of us. :) Thanks for sharing your new tradition. We're going to steal the idea and make gingerbread houses!

Those kids are so happy! Way to go. Overlooking mess in order to let the kids have fun is tough on some moms (not me. ha, ha), but the end result is happy kids with great memories of fun and loving times. We always make graham cracker trains because you don't have to have a roof, they are tough to make.
I can't wait to see what the next experience is.

I love your new tradition idea. It's similar to our Spring break "stay-cation" we did last year. Great memories!

what a great family tradition you are starting. i too am trying really hard to lay low on the santa thing, and teach my girls about christ and the spirit of giving. It is hard to teach 3 and 2 yr olds about that... anyway, love the gingerbread house, your family is amazing and you are doing an amazing job with the kids. Sure miss you guys.

Very fun! We do this every year and it is a must. i love the creativity. My family always did them and we designed our own, but the controlling mother in me and because I have dealt with melt downs in the past, because of lack of cordination, has opted for the graham cracker hot glue route. I might have to rethink now that they are getting older. Love it!
