Jadis

On Thursday, after years and years of begging, and a full year of searching for just the right one, we adopted a dog. We drove over to Yakima (about 3 hours away in Eastern WA) to pick her up from the breeder who was selling her. We were told that she was "a bit shy," but that she would do very well with a family to love and care for her.

She's beautiful! A gorgeous white coat, deep black eyes. She did seem rather timid when we first met her, but I wasn't sure if her shivering was from fear or because it was sub-zero and snowing in Yakima. She was great on the car ride home, sitting quietly beside Jared in the back seat.

But once we got her home and out of the car, we began to realize that her shyness was worse than we thought. She has spent the last 4 days pretty much hiding every chance she gets. If she's in the back yard, she hides behind the heat pump. In the garage, she hides in her crate and refuses to come out. In the house, she will hide under a table or in a book shelf. She actually does pretty well on a leash, but she shies away at the slightest noise - a car, another dog or person.

So today I took her to the vet. She confirmed our concerns. Jadis is a very sweet dog, gentle and calm, but "pathalogically timid." The vet recommended that she would do much better in a more mellow household - perhaps with an elderly owner, or a couple without kids. So now I need to contact the breeder and see what our options are.

Sigh.
