Clamming

Saturday morning, we went clamming. Please note - it was raining & cold (in May - Grrrr). I think that qualifies us as "hardcore clammers."

We went with our friends, Trista & Ron. They are true, dedicated outdoorsy types: homemade-sausage-making, bearmeat-eating, decorate-with-antlers-in-the-living-room type people. Nathan & I are pathetic city slickers around them.

Anyways, they let us tag along to their secret beach, where you can find the best and most plentiful shellfish around. Did I mention it was raining? And cold? Yeah, it was.

So, we arrived at the beach and hiked down to the water, crept under an old, rotting pier, past the skeleton of an ancient boat, and arrived at The Beach. It was beautiful (even though it was a bit rainy. And cold.)

We got right in, digging clams at breakneck speed. Truthfully, Ron & Trista did most of the backbreaking shovel work. I was on my hands and knees, grabbing up all the clams as they were unearthed.

Hey, it was trickier than it sounds. There are half a dozen different types of clams on that beach, (here's a little primer for you non-clamming folk), but we only wanted 2 types: the manila or the horse clam. Butter clams were plentiful, but apparently (according to Ultra-Clammer Ron) they don't "give up their sand" as well as the others. ??? I didn't argue; I just tried to sort as fast as he could dig 'em up.

Within an hour, we had more than our limit.

Next, we moved on to the oyster field. It was a long stretch of beach, just covered with big 'ol oysters.Bet you didn't know this: you have to shuck the oysters there on the beach and just take the meat, leaving the shells on the beach. Why? Because they are covered with little baby oysters. True story. I saw them myself. Pretty dang cute, I might add.

Here are a couple videos of the boys enjoying some early morning raw oysters.

And here is Adana, tired of being WET and COLD and ready to go home and get a snack.

We have watched Micah spit out the oyster at least a dozen times! They swear that he says that the oysters are "cute" and not "puke". Thanks for the clamming enjoyment.

That is utterly DIS-Gusting! It gives me the heebie jeebies watching them eat those slimy creatures! Ga-ross! Jared is the true champion slurping down that thing. Guess after living in Turkey, nothin phases him.

Jessica - that would be just like Micah to say oysters are cute. But I'm pretty sure he's saying puke (although, luckily, he didn't!)

Kristi - you know, I credit YOU with the fact that Jared will eat virtually anything. It was because of you that he grew up eating "dinner group" food. He was raised with the idea that "you eat whatever is served you, 'cuz mom's not cooking tonight." That dinner group was awesome!!
