Still Tasty

I just discovered this amazing website: StillTasty

This just compliments so beautifully my obsessive-compulsive abhorance of food that has been left in my refrigerator too long. (I was going to insert a photo here of the inside of my fridge to show you how bare I tend to keep it. But that would require me to wipe up the sticky glob of pink goo that's on one of the shelves, and I'm just not in the mood for that right now. I said I keep it empty, not spotless.)

Let's just say that I have a very strict 3-day policy: If a container of leftovers has been in my fridge for more than 3 days, it's compost. I prefer to discard all food items BEFORE they start growing a beard, because once that fuzzy green appears, it's just too nasty to dump out and I end up tossing the whole container into the garbage. Such a waste, I know. But I can't stand the thought of accidentally getting a whiff of rotten leftover lasagne or curdled whatever-that-used-to-be.

Thanks to this new website, those days of filling up the landfill with my Tupperware may soon be over. This site is so freakin' comprehensive. It will tell you when to toss your:

* homemade bean soup (after 3-4 days - I knew it!),
* your opened dark chocolate bar (a year in your pantry - as if it would actually go uneaten that long),
* or your opened can of Coke Zero (2-3 days, with the warning that an opened can of soda will soon go flat and lose its flavor. Duh!)

They have some great food storage tips, advice on how long you can freeze items, and lots of other interesting food storage advice. And there's even an iPhone app so that I can get a notice when something in my fridge is about to go bad. No more surprise green fuzz. Oh happy day.

Seriously! A notice on your phone when something is going to be going bad? Come on Brooke!:)

I just barely tossed Nathan's sweet potatoes from Thanksgiving. I was hoping Darin would eat them. (Just Teasing)

I clean fridge before I shop each week, much easier than the constant phone reminders that would be coming to me. Also, I use the smell test. My nose is way too sensitive...one hint of uggh and it is out.

Yeah, things get tossed usually on Sunday after church when we're rooting through the fridge looking for something for lunch. I have a hard time throwing away left-overs even if I know no one will eat them. Such a waste! But if they've been in there all week, then they get tossed.

I'll still use things after their "best by" dates, like mustard, sour cream (come on, it's supposed to be sour! unless it's growing fuzz, that's just gross), salad dressings, etc. But not milk. Brad and Kylie won't even drink the last inch of milk even if the carton has just been opened. It must be a heriditary trait. I'll drink it no problem, unless it smells bad.

Oh gosh, you got the heeebie geeebies looking in my fridge the other day didn't you. Now it makes sense why you had to 'pick up the kids' in such a hurry.
