We don't watch violent movies or TV shows in our home. Childhood should be free from those depressing, decidedly non-uplifting images.
However, I encourage my kids to watch the 9-11 footage. I want them to understand (1) how sudden and devastating the destruction was, (2) how amazing the American people were in pulling together to help each other through it, and (3) that we should pray that it never happens again. Anywhere. Not in the United States, not in Europe or Iraq or Korea.
Killing innocent people is wrong. Those who do it must be punished. Those who survive must unite to mourn and remember.

Thanks Brooke. I'm so glad you're thinking about it just like me. I remember that day staring at the words on the screen and reading them over and over completely in disbelief "Live from New York City".
Amazing. I don't think anyone will forget where they were that morning. Nicole came home with lots of questions yesterday and I am going to show her this clip. It brings you right back to that day, doesn't it? She was only 1 yr old, but I agree with you about talking to them about it.
Thanks!!!
I knew this day was coming but somehow forgot about it with the hustle and bustle of the monring. When I went to pick him up from school the flag was flying half mast, and I instantly remembered. I had a nice talk with him that day about it, and in his 5 year old way he understands a little bit more about it. He watched the History Channel Documentary with me, and it seemed to make more sense when he actually saw it happening rather than me retelling him what had happened on the horrible day.
I also noticed we hadn't bought a flag yet, so we went to the store and bought our flag and put it up.
Sadly, I don't think the United States has done a good job of punishing, let alone identifying, those responsible for the 9/11 attack.
