Where has all my money gone?

This September (so far), here are the fundraisers that I've been asked to contribute to:

1. Ordway (elementary school) Jogathon
2. Blakeley (elementary school) wrapping paper sales
3. Boy Scouts Crop Walk (hunger relief)
4. Soccer Club Cookie Dough sales
5. Woodward (middle school) Dance Derby
6. Sakai (intermediate school) Mathathon

WHY do all the fundraisers have to happen in September?? I'm already broke from all the expenses of Back-To-School (new clothes, binders, pencils, Kleenex; Jared was required to get a $90 calculator for math!).

And please note: we're not talking about just one donation per above-listed item. My neighborhood has 46 kids! Each puppy-eyed kid is knocking on my door, begging me to support their school/team/troop "because the class who turns in the most money wins a popcorn party!"

Look, kid . . . A bag of popcorn would cost me about 50 cents. I'll be happy to pop some up for you.

I know. I know. The money is for a good cause. It goes to support our schools/soccer fields/hungry kids in Africa. All good causes. It’s not that I don’t want to contribute – I do!

But I'm tapped. Couldn't they at least spread the begging out over the course of the year, rather than, WHAM! hit me all at once?

Like the Girl Scouts. They sell their cookies in the spring. Smart.

So, sorry, but no more donations from me this month. I'm saving up for my Thin Mints and Samoas.

I HATE it when schools, PTAs, sport teams --- you name it EXPLOIT children to earn money. Why not just ask the parents to donate time or money when needed. This is a real sore spot in my mental and emotional world. GRRRRRRR. Don't send my grandchildren out door to door. Just let me know how much is expected of them and I'll mail you a check.

Well, I am glad I got to you for my TS fundraiser a few months ago! ;-)

Like your parents, I would much rather just write a check. Then again, I already pay $14K per year in property taxes, and I homeschool my kids. That leaves me feeling not particularly obligated to buy popcorn and wrapping paper for school fundraisers....
