Aug. 22 - Nathan turned 37 years old. We had a BBQ party with some friends at our house. Good food, lots of fun.
Aug. 25 - Nathan & I have been married 13 years. We took off for a nice weekend get-away to the Washington coast. Beautiful beaches, but of couse all we could think about was how much fun the kids would have there.
He annoyed the heck out of me, asking all about vampires & werewolves . . . And NO, we didn't see any. (He said he would do a "guest post" on this trip. Don't hold your breath for it.) :-)
Aug. 26 - I took the boys to see Weird Al Yancovic in concert at the Evergreen State Fair. It was a blast, even though it poured rain the entire concert. We sang and laughed and yelled until we were hoarse. Here's a snippit of gool 'ol Weird Al:
Aug. 27 - Micah turned 10 years old! He is such an awesome boy. I really don't think I know another kid who is so unique, so easy-going and happy and creative and helpful - all the time. We are constantly commenting on how lucky we feel to have him in our family. Unfortunately, I had a bad flu on his bday, so I didn't get many pictures. But here is one of him blowing out the candles on his birthday crepe (he didn't want a cake.)
Aug. 29-31 - We went camping at Lake Easton State Park with some friends. This was our first camping trip since the girls were born. It was very fun, although pretty cold since we were up in the mountains. The kids are great campers - they loved building fires, digging in the dirt, chopping wood and exploring. Adana slept like a log in the tent (that was my biggest concern, but she loved it!) Nathan & I have come to admit, though, that we are wimps. We don't like to be cold or wet or bored or dirty. So I don't forsee us becoming the Happy Campin' Family anytime soon.

How about camping in a 5 bedroom cabin? The kids can still build campfires, explore, dig in the dirt, etc. Think about it
The older I get, the more your mom's idea of camping appeals to me! Poor Ben has been begging to go camping with our family, but all he's gotten so far are a father/son campout and sleeping in the tent in the yard with Brad. We used to camp a lot with Nate and Kylie. It was more fun (I almost said funner!) when we were younger and poorer.
My dear, when we got married, Mike registered for tons of camping equipment. We have used it *twice* in the fourteen years since. One time was at Mt. Lassen, when my fear of bears caused me to *shriek* in my sleep, scaring my husband and all living things withing a mile of our tent. The other time was in our back yard in Hoosierland, when Ian actually peed in the tent. :-P Oh well.
We would camp out in the yard here, but there is that whole bear issue....
Happy birthday to Micah! We really need to come visit you -- I think he and Aidan would really get along well.
Good luck to Jared in seventh grade. I am having trouble getting my head around the idea thast we have middle schoolers! Eek!
Gah -- sorry about the typos....
You went without us!! I can't believe you went camping. I am glad you had a good time. Now save that happy feeling and we'll go up to Lake Crescent next year and rent a cabin.
Weird Al in concert is a blast. I've seen him three times: 1987, 1995 and 2000. And his musical parodies remain just as fun as they did when he came out with "Oh, Ricky, you're so fine, you play your congas all the time, hey Ricky ...."
I'm glad you didn't forget your kids during your getaway as a couple, but I think rediscovering yourselves as a couple is important. I've been talking a lot lately with couples I know who were married up to 10 years before they started having kids, and they seem to have a really healthy balance between being best friends/lovers and being parents that never gets lost in the daily shuffle. Not saying you don't, but anything you can do to build the foundation between the two of you in a non-kid context probably helps a ton. Glad you two saw that and acted on it.
